Springboks vs Barbarians 2025: Historic Rugby Match in Cape Town
Rugby fans, get ready! On Saturday, 28 June 2025, the Springboks will take on the Barbarians at DHL Stadium in Cape Town. This will be the first time the Barbarians play in South Africa, making it a truly historic event.
Tickets go on sale Tuesday, 6 May at 09h00 through Ticketmaster, starting at R250.
A Historic First for South Africa
Barbarians matches usually take place in London. However, this time, the iconic team will travel to the southern tip of Africa. Thanks to a partnership between SA Rugby and Pitch International, the match brings global rugby prestige to Cape Town. Even more importantly, it helps the Boks build momentum before their upcoming Castle Lager Incoming Series against Italy.
Rugby Legends on Both Sides
Expect a showcase of international talent. The Barbarians will include top players from the Vodacom URC, French Top 14, English Premiership, Super Rugby, and Japan’s League One. Veteran coach Robbie Deans will lead the team. He’s previously coached the All Blacks, Wallabies, and Crusaders.
Their last match against the Springboks took place in 2016 at Wembley. It ended in an exciting 31–31 draw. Now, as they face each other for the ninth time, the Barbarians lead the rivalry with four wins to the Springboks’ three, plus one draw.
Springboks Eye Winning Start
Springbok head coach Rassie Erasmus believes this match is the perfect way to gear up for a busy season.
“Training helps, but nothing replaces real match intensity,” Erasmus said.
“Playing the Barbarians at home gives us the edge we need before the official series begins.”
After this clash, the Springboks will face Italy twice, then take on Georgia, followed by the Rugby Championship in August.
Barbarians Promise Exciting Play
Robbie Deans is building a dynamic squad to challenge the Boks and thrill the fans.
“Two iconic teams on one field, it’s going to be electric,” Deans said.
“We’re coming to compete, but also to entertain.”
He’ll be joined by assistant coaches Patrice Collazo (France), Atsushi Kanazawa (Japan), and Sam Whitelock, the former All Black.
