Cape Town Launches New Initiatives to Boost Inner-City Tourism
Cape Town is rolling out exciting initiatives to attract tourists and local visitors this summer. At the heart of this push is the revamped “Urban Safari” bus route, designed to reconnect travellers with the city’s rich culture and history.
A new sightseeing bus stop has also been introduced at Hout Bay’s Hop-on Hop-off stop. Additionally, a vibrant yellow New7Wonders of Nature frame now sits atop Table Mountain, giving visitors a stunning photo opportunity.
Urban Safari: A Fresh Perspective
The Urban Safari bus, launched by Urban Safaris in partnership with the City of Cape Town, aims to revitalise inner-city tourism. The sector suffered greatly during the COVID-19 pandemic. Decorated with leopard spots and safari-inspired designs, the bus carries 34 passengers while highlighting Cape Town’s urban heritage.
Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis emphasised the importance of bringing visitors back to the city centre.
“During COVID, tourists mostly avoided the inner city. While Table Mountain and Boulders Beach remained busy, many cultural and historic sites went unnoticed.”
The Urban Safari route now stops at key landmarks such as the Castle of Good Hope, District Six Museum, South African Museum, St George’s Cathedral, and the Company’s Garden.
Supporting Local Businesses
The Castle of Good Hope acts as a central “anchor” for the route. Nearby businesses are already benefiting from increased foot traffic. Mayor Hill-Lewis stressed that this initiative is about more than sightseeing.
“It’s revitalizing an entire ecosystem. Restaurants, small tourism businesses, and local guides all benefit from a busier city centre,” he said.
These improvements follow major inner-city clean-ups, including the removal of large homeless encampments. Hill-Lewis added that visitors can now explore Cape Town safely, thanks to over 100 full-time safety officers deployed across the area.
“Safety has improved significantly, making the city centre welcoming for locals and tourists alike,” he added.
